“Christine,” Thomas’ voice wakes me from a nap I didn’t mean to take.

He’s standing in my open doorway with a bowl full of sago that, for a second, looked like a stack of pancakes before my brain registered to the country I’m in. And he’s masked in his friendly familiar grin. “My mom wanted us to bring you some sago. In case you’re hungry.”

I can see Antonio’s frizzy blond hair as he peers in behind Thomas in the doorway, but I’m not sure he wants to be acknowledged.

“Thanks,” I say, sitting up on my bed. “I didn’t miss dinner, did I?”

Thomas smiles. “No, we won’t have dinner until later.”

“He told our mom to make sago for you,” Antonio blurts out.

Thomas elbows him.

Antonio doubles over after the blow, then, “What? You did.”

Their sibling bantering makes me smile.

Thomas faces me and sets the bowl on the ground in front of the doorway. Like he’s unsure if he should come into my hut or not. “I thought you might be hungry since you don’t have any food here.”

He’s right. I don’t have much food besides some chicken crackers I bought at the market at his mother’s insistence.

“Thank you,” I say. “I’m starving, so I know my stomach will appreciate it.”

Thomas’ smile widens, then he begins to say something. But his words are overpowered by a subtle rattle that grows into a roar under our feet.

The sound that accompanies the shaking earth under me, is like nothing I’ve ever heard before. And the aggressive rumbling would have thrown me off my feet if I had been standing.

Before the far wall crumbles before my eyes, I see Thomas jump back and protect Antonio with his body. Shielding him.

Then, everything goes black.
